Reading Dharma Bums (new poems)

Reading Dharma Bums

Reading Dharma Bums

Walking down Berkeley streets wearing brown pants and a navy blue t-shirt
clothes which i imagine the beats to have worn
preparing to go camping to Big Sur and Mt. Shasta
then a trip up the coast to Seattle
living that other American Dream
The dream of freedom

oh jack, you came to such a sad end, but

you inspired millions and millions
among them this humble writer
you are one of my spiritual ancestors
thank you

What Can Compare

What can compare with the feeling of

walking around drunk, but
not too drunk
on a nice sunny day
walking into shops
finding open bathrooms
talking with shopkeepers
feeling free but
wishing you had something to lose

  1. Hi Jay,

As you know, I enjoyed very much sitting round the camp fire listening to you sing and play guitar for the few of us we gathered from McBride's camp site on Mt Shasta only last week (first week of Sept 2012). Thank you for your heart, your depth of thought/heart, your honesty, your desire to help others and your willingness to be vulnerable- a rare thing in this world (but that is changing, I have that faith..after all it is 2012!), and your wisdom.

Interesting that when I arrived to the camp site you~ my camp host~ noticed my copy of Dharma Bums and said you had recently read it yourself! And now I see your (very) little poem about that. It is a JOY to read your poetry about so many things, prolifically covering just about every topic of human existence. Only years of deeply searching while existing in this world, on this funny beautiful little planet can yield such quality work. It doesn't matter if you're recognized or not in the popular culture... the universe hears! You make a difference Jay just as you did with me last week. I love your writing, thank you Jay. Keep on writing!!
